Difficult Aging in Place Conversations: What Industry Experts Have to Say

From the Author:

“This book addresses common, yet rarely discussed topics surrounding potential needs and concerns with aging, and how to facilitate the difficult conversation often associated with each topic. Approaching every stage of life with a mindset of proactive aging and wellness requires planning and adapting, especially at later stages of life. It may, at times, require uncomfortable and difficult conversations on topics we would rather avoid, but are critically important.

Having conversations, even difficult ones, about hopes and fears, what is important, potential concerns and necessary support, can help in recognizing where planning, adaptability, and proactive lifestyle choices may be needed. Putting in place what is needed allows for increased opportunity of living safely, independently, and comfortably with dignity, autonomy, and quality of life, and successfully aging well in any place.”

The book is an insightful and valuable guide for anyone facing the realization of growing older. More importantly the book provides a comprehensive view into the necessity for family members and loved ones to plan ahead while dealing with providing assistance and care to for aging parents or family members. The chapter containing the real life story where a independent healthy parent experiences a stroke and becomes completely dependent within a blink of an eye was an all to common occurrence that matched my personal experience. In short, the book is a wealth of practical information and can serve as a complete resource guide for proactive plan to address the needs of parents and loved ones through the aging process.

Unfortunately, I recently struggled with the complexities and challenges of aging parents and wish this book had been available two years ago! Navigating through this process isn't easy, especially realizing that the parent-child roles have reversed. This book covers some of the valuable insights into navigating healthcare systems, financial planning, and even deciding when to take the car keys away. This practical guidance is essential to help anyone going through this difficult and emotional journey. Since I am now 66 years old, I think I will ask my adult children to read it so that their experience will be easier than mine.
